T@D Frequently Asked Questions or FAQ

Question
What is "Together at a Distance or T@D"?
Answer
T@D is a three year (2007 - 2010) adult literacy project developed and managed by the Nunavut Department of Education and funded by the Office of Literacy and Essential Skills (HRSDC). There are three components to the project:

Six Online E-learning Workshops
We are in the process of developing six free of charge, open access online e-learning workshops. Workshops range from "What is e-learning" to "How to design an e-course". Three of the workshops are now online at http://ndlp.ca. Workshops will all be online by late December 2009 with edits and re-development taking place until July, 2010.

The project developer/designer has been collaborating with Inuit Elders and Educators to ensure Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit principles provide the framework for workshops.

Research
A review of e-learning in the Inuit pan-Arctic is under way. We are also conducing, and will publish Action Research on the pilot phase of workshop delivery.

Portal
Workshops, published action research and related learning resources will be placed on the portal (http://togetheratadistance.ca) and will remain there for anyone to use or re-develop. This is free of charge. We ask only that other parties reciprocate by allowing us to link to their new resources free of charge.

Question
Will the online workshops be created in Inuktitut?
Answer
The funding for this project only covers development of the workshops in one language. Upon completing the last two workshops, we encourage participants to develop new materials, or re-develop workshops in Inuktitut.

Question
Who can take the workshops?
Answer
Workshops one and two are for anyone, but are specifically directed at those new to e-learning. Workshops three to six are for people who will facilitate, teach, or develop e-learning materials for others. Anyone can create an account on the Learning Management System (http://ndlp.ca) and complete these workshops.

Question
How do I get a project poster?
Answer
Posters are being distributed throughout Nunavut, and to our associates in the NWT, Nunavik and Nunatsiavut. PDF versions can also be printed from HERE.

Question
What kind of computer and Internet connection do I need to take the workshops?
Answer
You may use any computer operating system that supports a recent Web Browser such as Firefox. More bandwidth will mean quicker loading of pages, especially for media rich resources such as video. Some government networks block multimedia resources over the Web. If this happens, you may choose to download available workshops from the portal (http://togetheratadistance.ca).

Question
When and where are the pilots?
Answer
For an up-to-date listing of pilots, visit the landing page at http://togetheratadistance.ca and look on the right side of the page under "Upcoming Pilots".

Question
Can I run a pilot workshop?
Answer
There are two forms of pilots - team lead and community facilitated. We are still looking for communities to participate in piloting workshps 3, 4, 5 and 6 in particular. Pilots may be conducted with a team member facilitating, or through a local community facilitator. We will help prepare the community facilitator and provide a Facilitator Guide. In the NWT and Nunavut, we can also provide four notebook computers and a high speed QINIQ/Airware modem.

Question
I've completed "How to Design an e-course, now what?
Answer
Congratulations - that's great. Now please put your skills to work in developing e-learning resources for others - especially in Inuktitut. Let us know when you have finished as we would love to link your resource from the portal (http://togetheratadistance.ca). If you don't have a place to develop your course - talk to us as well - we can help. Click on Contact us to discuss further.
